Dance debate…?
How many different types of Dance are there?
Okay, there are the big ones - ballet, ballroom dancing etc… but what about folk dancing and morris dancing? Are these two different forms of dance or is one the father and the other the daughter?
And what about a dance category such as modern Jive? Where does that fit?
Jive is regarded usually as a form of ballroom - so it modern Jive a derivative of Jive which is a part of the group of dances called ballroom?
Wikipedia says that dance is both a sport and an art form and can be regarded as any stylised form of non-verbal communication.
But what do you think? If you are a Salsa teacher and you begin to develop new styles of Salsa, is that a derivative of Salsa or is it a whole new form of dance?
Let’s discuss below…

I’d say that within any form of dance - say jive - there are certain steps which are always present - in the case of jive this is a 4 step rythmn with a bounced step - so long as this is present, it is always jive.
Now, you can find lots of different music genre’s that fit a four beat / step dance routine - and picking those - rather than traditional jive music - is what makes the dance ‘modern jive’.
That’s my view on it, anyway…
